Overwhelmed with gratitude as I sit here in my reading/writing chair meditating on God’s goodness. A gorgeous mid-summer morning, the sun is yet to make its full presence – yet that early dawn light is streaming, a whisper of a breeze, the potential for a new day. All I want to do is write about gratitude. It’s the best way to start a day-worshipping the One who created it all, and holds it all together, sustaining it and each one of us. Each heartbeat happens because He directs it. Each breath driven by the design He created in us. From Him, through Him and to Him.
We have dear friends who were in a head on collision this past week. Both walked away after being extracted by fire department, cut out of the vehicle by the jaws of life. Amazing. Banged up for sure, some broken ribs, bruising and sore as can be, but alive and will recover…..because our bodies miraculously heal because the Great Physician designed us that way. Miracles.
Everywhere we look, we can take in, in gratitude, miracles. The sun rises everyday-warming the earth-summer, glorious summer. I can’t get enough. Hummingbirds. Have you ever stopped to think how absolutely tiny their tiny little hearts are in their tiny little bodies? And then how tiny the little blood vessels are in their tiny hearts? And how fast their wings beat? Tiny little forms that zip around at close to the speed of light, startling us when they show up at a feeder above our heads with their wings humming. Zzzzzz…
Yesterday afternoon I got to golf with my beloved. It was an amazing round. My best ever. We walked and talked. I was grateful for the relaxation, the beauty, the time together and yes, an amazing round. He is my coach and is fantastic and patient as he will mention something I can do to tweak this or that with my game, not over-coaching and frustrating me, always encouraging, always patient. The Lord has given him a gift in that he can see what needs to be adjusted. I make the adjustment and bam, the ball does more closely what I will it to do. Miracle.
We have an amazing pastor and church family. Friends who have become family. If you haven’t experienced it, you wouldn’t understand. I hope that you get to experience it if you haven’t. It is a life changing experience. Lifted and lifting, encouraging and being encouraged, spurring and being spurred on by one another we do life together. We break bread, we study, we commune, we cry together, we laugh together (Deener, Beanie…indeed we laugh together), we learn to forgive and we grow together. We all share brokenness and imperfection and love one another despite all our weaknesses. We grow older together. When someone is sick or needs help, meals are delivered, a team shows up to help when there is a need for help with a move.
And then there is God’s Word. John 1:1-5, 10-14 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made, without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it……He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but form of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the flory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
Monday. A beginning. A week full of potential. What will you do with it? I challenge you, if you aren’t in the habit of it, to spend the first part of everyday, sitting for a few moments in awe and gratitude of the One who holds it all together. May your week be blessed.
